October 2003 To Vote or Not to Vote

President's Message

We have a policy in our household; if you don?t vote you are not allowed to discuss politics. There is a historic vote coming up on October 7th. We are voting to recall a sitting governor, and voting to replace him in mid-term with a potential slew of candidates that range from a porn star to a movie actor. Whether or not you are pro-recall the law allows a Governor to be recalled. Governor Davis would like you to equate the recall to an impeachment, but it is not. Simply stated some of the electorate are not happy with the performance of the Governor and want a change. That?s just my opinion.

Why are people upset at the Governor? We have a huge budget deficit; we have a workman?s comp system that is driving companies out of business or out of California; insurance premiums are skyrocketing; medical insurance is beyond the reach of many hard working families. Forcing companies to provide medical insurance is not a solution. Our cities and counties are facing greatly reduced funding from the state putting many into serious financial straights. Services will be cut and Infrastructure projects will be put on hold.

Will a recall magically solve these problems .. No ? but what it will do is give our elected officials a wakeup call. What it will do is put some of the issues we are facing on the front page. If will force us to make some hard decisions. It is a simple rule in most households that if you spend more than you earn - you have to borrow. We can not tax and tax and spend and spend without the system finally breaking. We are going to have to make decisions as to who can have access to services and what types of services are offered. We need to find ways to make things work.

The only way out of our crisis is to become involved. We need to make sure our elected officials are getting the message we are not happy. We need to let them know we have some good ideas as to how to solve our problems. We will differ on these ideas, but if we do not become involved?. if we do not vote .. we can not complain about our predicament. Become involved in your community. Become involved in your government. Stay informed and let your elected officials know your opinions on issues. You have a voice .. use it!!

Special thanks to Sandy and her staff for their warm welcome and hospitality.

The Chamber would also like to thank V.P. Membership Jenny Gosselin, Jano Graphics, for the hard work, enthusiasm and energy that she put into the event.

Networking Update
by Ivy Weiss / Allen Glazer

The Ambassadors did a wonderful job presenting a new networking program during the August Luncheon. They will be at it again in October.

Don?t miss this month?s special networking luncheon Thursday, October 23 at the Radisson Hotel Chatsworth.

Today?s contact is tomorrow?s customer.

2003 Business Expo
by Wendi Day - Chair Business Expo

We have a new date and location for one of the Chamber?s most fun and best networking events ? the 3rd Annual Business Expo! The Chamber is proud to welcome the Business Expo co-sponsor and host, Porter Valley Country Club. The event will be held at Porter Valley Country Club on Tuesday, November 11th from 3:30 to 7:30 pm.

The theme is ?Happy Days.? You can bet there will be great music, good food, wonderful door prizes and lots of networking opportunities. And, we hope the participating vendors will have fun with the theme. Decorate your table and yourself?poodle skirts, fuzzy dice, and ?DA? hairstyles will be the order of the day.

This year there is an expanded the format, which will include all businesses ? home-based to large corporations. To be sure that all vendors have the chance to see and be seen by everyone who attends, we will be having a ?Passport? again this year. All the businesses participating in the Expo will be listed in the passport and all the visitors must have a representative from each vendor sign their passport to be eligible for the grand prize drawing. We encourage the vendors to have drawings at their individual tables, as well.

We are also offering sponsorship packages to give your business even more exposure prior to and during the event.

So, don?t be left out this year, applications are already being accepted and spaces are filling up. Applications are attached in the newsletter. Please call the Chamber office with any questions you may have.

Be There or be Square!
