Looking to the future of Chatsworth
by Vanessa Watters
Save Chatsworth, Inc.
SAVE CHATSWORTH, INC. is a coalition of homeowners and local non-profit organizations, dedicated to saving Chatsworth from excessive, irresponsible development.
Save Chatsworth, Inc. was founded in July of 2002, with the following mission statement: ?To ensure that all future development remains consistent with the existing rural character and heritage of Chatsworth.? Our immediate goal was the reduction of negative impacts on the Chatsworth community from the construction of the Deerlake Ranch Development Project. In 2001, 488 homes, at an average size of 3000 square feet, on an average lot size of 6000 square feet, were proposed for the Deerlake Ranch Project. At public hearings before the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Save Chatsworth expressed concern over the amount of homes, the size of the lots, and the impact that such a dense development would have on traffic and local services, and on the environment. The developer was requested to provide larger homes on equestrian/estate-sized lots, minimum 15,000 square feet. Over the course of three years of negotiations and meetings with dedicated and committed community members, the development project was reduced to 375 homes, a reduction of over 100 homes.
The current project plan includes about 55 designated equestrian properties, and 50% of the lots are 15,000 square feet or over. In addition, numerous community benefits have been obtained, including traffic mitigation measures, improved and extended equestrian and hiking trails, money for the Supervisor?s discretionary fund to be used expressly for the benefit the local community, open space preservation and parkland, and public sewers for the Twin Lakes community just north of the 118 freeway at Topanga Canyon.
Final approval was given to the Deerlake Ranch Development Project by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on August 10, 2004, and due in large part to the efforts of Save Chatsworth, the end result is a project significantly more in keeping with the existing Chatsworth community than what was originally proposed, and according to Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, represents a ?model for resolving county land use controversies?.
Other projects that will require future local input are the proposed Hidden Creek development in Brown?s Canyon, the Eagles Nest/Yone Tree development, and the issue of potential subdivision and re-zoning of older existing equestrian properties and stables.
In addition, Save Chatsworth has been asked to participate in the ?RE-ENCHANTING THE CITY CONFERENCE 3: Wild Corridors and Wild Highways ? Helping to Build Green Crossings For Our Wildlife? conference planned for Saturday, October 16, 2004, and to be held at the Friendship Auditorium in Griffith Park. Presenters at this conference include the California Department of Transportation, Center for Biological Diversity, the National Park Service (Thousand Oaks), and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, among others.
Save Chatsworth sincerely thanks the community for all its past support. To continue our efforts on behalf of Chatsworth, we need on-going public commitment. Please consider attending our next meeting, scheduled for Thursday, September 30, 7:00 p.m. at the Depot Meeting Room located in the Chatsworth Metrolink Station on Devonshire. Long-Time Chatsworth Resident and Businessman Bill Powers Named as a Fernando Award Finalist
by Ivy Weiss
The Chamber is pleased and proud to congratulate our nominee, Bill Powers, Law Offices of William F. Powers, Jr., on being named as one of the five finalists for the 2004 Fernando Award. This marks Bill?s fourth nomination, and fourth entry in the ?Fab 5.? This year there were 10 nominees from various organizations.
The Fernando Award is given to honor years of service and volunteerism. Bill?s many years of dedication to Chatsworth and the San Fernando Valley have helped to enrich our communities. ?It is an honor to have been nominated for this prestigious award by such wonderful organizations, as the Chamber, Chatsworth BID and Northridge/Chatsworth Rotary. To have been placed in such elite company as I am with my fellow nominees, humbles me,? Bill said after the announcement was made. He has also been nominated by Valley Cultural Center and MEND.
Bill is a lifetime member of the Chamber, and is the current Vice President of Legislative Action. He is the Executive Vice President of the BID and serves on many other boards, donating his time to many causes.
The Fernando Award is nationally recognized and considered the ?Academy Award? of volunteerism for the San Fernando Valley.
See and Be Seen ?Where All Roads Lead to Success?
by Malila Davalos
Silver King, Expo Committee Co-chair
Still debating on whether or not to participate? It?s coming and if you don?t hurry, you just may miss it. The Chatsworth/Porter Ranch Chamber Business Expo ?Where All Signs Point to Success? is set to succeed. The Valley?s fastest growing Expo is set for September 29, 2004. If you still have not signed up to exhibit and would love to, please call the Chamber for availability.
Want to check out local businesses? Remember that Expo hours are from 4:30pm to 7:00pm at Knollwood Country Club. There will be many businesses to network with, prizes to win and fun to be had.
Careful planning has been made to facilitate exhibitors in many ways. Telesis Community Credit Union has sponsored a great marketing campaign promising great attendance and wonderful exposure. Many businesses in the area have received flyers promoting the event. All exhibitors will have flyers to pass out, and there will be a mass mailing to local households.
Knollwood Country Club is setting up their spacious hall to accommodate all exhibitors and visitors. Offering valet parking and a no host bar are only some of the perks this great location offers.
This fusion of businesses is a perfect concoction for success!
All are welcome! Please call the Chamber for more information, 818-341-2428.
